What Should My Pool’s Chlorine and pH Levels Be?

For residential pools, CDC recommends pH between 7.0 and 7.8 and free chlorine of at least 1 part per million (ppm). When cyanuric acid or stabilized chlorine products are used, CDC recommends at least 2 ppm free chlorine. Those are minimum public-health recommendations, not a complete water-balance plan for every pool.

Why free chlorine matters

Free chlorine is the portion available to sanitize the water. Total chlorine includes both free chlorine and combined chlorine. A test showing “chlorine” without distinguishing the two can hide a problem.

Sunlight, swimmers, sweat, debris, warm water, and algae all consume chlorine. Outdoor Southern California pools commonly use stabilizer to slow UV loss, but stabilizer also slows chlorine's disinfection action. The correct operating target therefore depends on the whole water profile and the products being used.

Why pH matters

As pH rises—especially above 8.0—chlorine becomes less effective at killing germs. Very low pH increases corrosion risk and can damage equipment and finishes. The commonly used 7.2–7.8 operating range sits within CDC's 7.0–7.8 recommendation and provides a practical comfort and equipment margin.

Test accurately

Use a dependable DPD drop-based kit when possible and follow its instructions. CDC notes that test strips are less accurate. Very high chlorine, above about 10 ppm, can bleach some tests and create a false low or zero result.

Test more often during heat, heavy swimming, parties, storms, algae treatment, or equipment trouble. Sample away from return jets and chemical feeders. Never mix reagents or pool chemicals, and store them as their labels direct.

Chlorine and pH are not the whole story

Alkalinity affects pH stability. Cyanuric acid affects chlorine behavior. Calcium hardness and overall saturation balance affect scaling, corrosion, and surfaces. Salt systems and plaster pools may need different management than other setups. Avoid chasing one number while ignoring the rest.

If your pool will not hold chlorine or pH keeps moving, look for the cause: contamination, high stabilizer, inadequate circulation, incorrect feeder output, a dirty salt cell, or testing error can all contribute.
