Why Is My Pool Filter Pressure So High?
High filter pressure usually means water is meeting extra resistance after it leaves the pump. A dirty filter is common, but a closed valve, return-line restriction, incorrect filter assembly or faulty gauge can also raise the reading. Compare the pressure with the clean starting pressure at the same pump speed.
START WITH THE CLEAN BASELINE
The number printed on the gauge is not automatically good or bad. Every pool has its own normal pressure based on plumbing, filter type and pump speed. Record the pressure immediately after a proper cleaning and use that as the baseline.
Pentair and Hayward guidance commonly recommends cleaning when pressure rises approximately 10 psi above that clean starting point, or sooner when return flow drops. With a variable-speed pump, compare readings at the same RPM.
COMMON CAUSES OF HIGH PRESSURE
• A cartridge, sand bed or D.E. grid loaded with debris.
• Algae or fine particles collected during cleanup.
• A return valve that is partly or fully closed.
• A blocked return fitting, heater bypass or other downstream restriction.
• Too much D.E. powder or a filter assembled incorrectly.
• A damaged or inaccurate pressure gauge.
• A pump speed that was increased since the baseline was recorded.
WHAT TO DO—AND WHAT NOT TO DO
Turn the equipment off before opening a filter, moving valves that should not be moved under flow, or inspecting internal parts. Pool filters operate under pressure and can cause serious injury if opened improperly. Follow the manufacturer’s shutdown and air-relief procedure.
Homeowners can safely note the pump RPM, observe return flow, inspect accessible baskets with the power off and confirm that normal return valves are open. If the reading is substantially above normal, the tank is leaking, or the gauge does not return toward zero when the pump is off, stop and arrange service.
CLEANING MAY NOT BE THE WHOLE ANSWER
If pressure remains high immediately after cleaning, the filter element may be scaled, damaged or installed incorrectly, or the restriction may be elsewhere. Repeatedly washing the filter without diagnosing the system can waste water and delay the actual repair.

Is 20 psi too high? Not necessarily. Twenty psi may be normal for one system and abnormal for another. The clean baseline and pump speed matter more than a universal number.
