Cracked Pool Skimmer Basket? What to Check

A cracked skimmer basket is easy to overlook when you empty leaves from the pool. But that small removable part has a useful job: holding surface debris while water continues through the circulation system. For Chino homeowners, spotting damage and identifying the correct replacement can keep a routine maintenance issue from becoming a harder troubleshooting problem.

Understand what the basket does

As Waterway explains in its skimmer guidance, the skimmer collects surface debris in a basket as water moves toward the filter. A split or missing section creates an opening where debris can escape collection. An overloaded basket creates a different problem: restricted flow. Neither condition should be ignored just because the pool still looks clear.

Look for damage during routine maintenance

Inspect the basket during manufacturer-directed maintenance, with pump power shut off and automatic restart prevented. Keep hands away from suction openings. If you are unsure how to access the basket safely, leave the inspection to your pool professional.

Look for these visible changes:

  • Splits through the sidewall or bottom

  • Missing pieces or openings larger than the original mesh

  • A warped rim or broken support tabs

  • A loose or broken lifting handle

Photograph the damage and any readable identification marks. If the basket is stuck, avoid prying it out or reaching below it. A damaged skimmer housing or support ledge also deserves inspection; replacing the basket alone may not address the problem.

Match the part before buying

Start with the skimmer model and its parts diagram. Record any number on the existing basket, then confirm compatibility with the equipment manufacturer or your service provider. A previous replacement may already be the wrong part.

Compare the top dimensions, bottom dimensions, height, rim shape, and handle arrangement. CMP's basket catalog shows how much these details vary among models. Measurements help identify a candidate, but they do not replace a confirmed model match. Some models also offer a separate replacement handle, so a broken handle does not always require a complete basket.

Check the fit without modifying anything

A compatible basket should sit in its intended position without being forced. If it tilts, drops past its support, or interferes with another component, stop and verify the part. Avoid cutting the rim, adding improvised weights, or patching broken mesh. Ask your technician to confirm the basket, support, and any associated components belong together.

Keep the deck lid secured afterward. Pentair's skimmer manual warns that an unsecured or damaged lid can create an injury hazard.

Keep debris from building up again

Check the basket more often when leaves or landscaping debris accumulate. Pentair notes that seasonal debris can fill baskets quickly. If surface collection remains weak after the basket is clean and correctly fitted, have the system checked instead of changing valves or pump settings by guesswork.
